lantern hibiscus
The beauty of hibiscus is always reminiscent of dreamy tropical lands for me. The genus contains hundreds of species which are renowned for their large, showy flowers. The painting portraits a rare species, commonly known as ‘lantern hibiscus’ or ‘wind bell hibiscus’, being admired by a curious sparrow. The five fractal-patterned petals of a flower curl up towards the stem, forming an exquisite hollow cage. A long stigma hanging off from centre of the cage, swings gently along with the wind.
2. a garden hollyhock
This is a portrait of a hollyhock bloomed in my garden early summer this year. It is guarded by a formidable praying mantis from any intrusive pests.
3. butterfly in lilies
I was fascinated by these giant, elegant flowers ever since I first introduced them into my garden. The sweet fragrance of lilies inviting the arrival of a black swallowtail butterfly has been one of the most enjoyable sceneries of my summer days.
4. Irises of takase River
The painting is inspired by a visit to the Kawase River in Tamana city in Japan during the iris festival in late May. Countless irises were in full bloom along the 700 metre-long riverbank, garnished by ancient stone walls and wooden bridges.
5. Autumn chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemums, symbolising happiness and vitality, carry special significance in the celebration of mid-autumn festival throughout the Chinese history. The event is a celebration of harvest by gathering family and friends, while feasting under a full moon. A mandatory dish at the dinner table is the seasonal delicacy, crabs.
